Hey all.
As i mentioned in my blog section last week, I wanted to start an area devoted just to talk about revenue and share stats of how much we make as indie developers / teams. This will be very interesting to read if others post here too.

It's easy to get discouraged when you read about some developers making millions, but the truth of the matter is that 99% of indie developers out there make 1% of the revenue, and the top 1% make 99% of the revenue.

So I wanted to share some of our revenue stats for today August 5th 2014.

As the title says on average per day we make:
$100 wtih chartboost.com ads
$18 with applovin.com ads
$25 with admob.com ads
$6 with amazon ads
$1 with iAd ads
$4 with in-app purchases

Current total = About $154 USD per day

Chartboost.com (remaining the same despite more games being added, could be because of the summer time or advertisers paying less per install)
Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.14.32 PM.png

Applovin.com (going up, perhaps because its the first full screen ad the players sees in the games, we started adding applovin only about 2 months ago)
Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.13.12 PM.png
Admob.com (slowly going down, we started to include amazon ads in more of our games recently, and also iAd)
Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.14.23 PM.png

Amazon.com ads (nice to see this growing)
Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.21.59 PM.png

iAds (pretty bad considering we have 11 games displaying iAd ads)
Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 4.20.47 PM.png

We also make some revenue with in-app purchases, but it's not large. So we definitely need to improve the in-app purchase revenue for sure. We can't just rely on ads.
As well there's a couple of smaller channels which generate revenue for us to including tapjoy.com, mopub.com, mobfox.com. We've not focussed on these and so they only bring in a few dollars each month.

I hope this was interesting / useful to everyone. I'll add another post to this section in a couple of weeks. If you post here please follow this format roughly, but you don't have to post all the screenshots. Just include the summary amount at the top and in the title of the post.

It's hard to believe that on the first day we only made $0.01 and only $3 per day for the first year, lol. That was very disheartening, but with persistence and focus I think anyone can be the next SuperCell or King.com. It took more than 3 years to reach this point.

Stay flexible, try new ideas, spread your risk, and repeat your successes!

Happy Developing [smile]
Martin

Hi Martin, this info is great to see, could you please also add the number of games you use those ads in?
Especially applovin and chartboost would be great. It doesn't have to be exact of course, but I think that would make this post even more informative.
Thanks for sharing.

How many people are taking salary off of that? If you feel like sharing it would be valuable information

AppLovin is like a Chartboost but only for the Start of the application? Do you integrate it in the same apps you integrate AdMob and Chartboost? (3 Ad types in the same App?)

Nice post! Important for beginners like me so we get a little perspective.

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply to the thread. Been a super busy couple of days here. I need to get the business running itself at some point so I can take a holiday [smile]

@Mzr, glad you found the post useful. For applovin its about 14 apps, for admob its about 60, and for chartboost is about 55.
Almost all the games are on google play, amazon, and iOS.

@NAMM. So far there's 3 people in the company including me. So the overall profit isn't huge, but it's slowly growing.
Applovin.com show full screen image ads and videos ads (they look pretty cool) and we show them when the game starts. Yeah all 3 ad networks are added in each game. Admob shows banners which are always on the screen, and chartboost ads appear after it's game over.

Glad you liked the post [smile] I'll add another revenue update to this section in a few weeks. Please post yours in here to if you are ok to share. It'll be interesting to see.

Hi Witmergers. Hope you're doing well.

Yeah i think I can do that. I'll try to find time this next couple of days. It's pretty simple though. The applovin site was very easy to follow. Here's the link:

https://applovin.com/integration#unity3dIntegration

For the android manifest stuff I didn't even need to change any of it. I just imported the plugin and it seemed to work without adding any of the app ID or bundle ID in the manifest file. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Martin,

This is my first post here..I watch your videos & I like those.

I have started my new small gaming company called Gamozome. I have release two games so far.

1) Smash And kill Ants Bugs Free
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Gamozome.CakeNBugs&hl=en

2) Cut The Power
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Gamozome.Help_The_Heekkoo_Free_Game&hl=en

I am using Heyzap Mediation with chartboost,Vungle,Applovin. All Interstitial ads at start, pause,Gameover state. No banners.

I have noticed few things & have queries :

1) Chartboost does not register all exact no. of downloads from other app stores like Getjar etc. is that true with you as well?
2) I have uploaded same APK to amazon app store which I have in Google store. Should I make different apk for that & link that with chartboost? Does that thing make any difference?
3) I have almost 800 downloads registered on Chartboost but till date I have not got any numbers in "Installs Delivered" which I guess is the main revenue stream. In comparison to your video (How much money made with chartboost) you on average getting 1 or 2 "Installs Delivered" upon 50+ downloads. Is there something we are wrong? Or you have some way for users to do downloads from ads?
4) In terms of CTR they are highly confusing, Sometimes you have lesser CTR, Clicks they pay you something $0.02-0.06. And sometimes in comparison you have high CTR, Clicks  its $0. How is this Maths?

Thanks in Advance.

Hi Martin -

I'm curious if you could give an update as far as profits from each network... specifically I'm interested in iAd vs Chartboost..

Also, what type of ads were you using in Chartboost vs iAd? Was Chartboost interstitials? If so, video or static?

Thanks!

djoshi you should make a separate app for Amazon so you can actualy separate stats and see how your app is doing on different stores! So dont mix up the APP ID and APP SIGNATURES!!!

I mixed one time and placed my google play app on Amazon and ads worked but if you click on them it just pas by no one could install anything, and the more apps button showed many apps but you could not install anything!

Hi Martin,

Thanks for this post. I've also seen a couple of your videos on your Youtube channel (via http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=214905 ) regarding your stats and revenues and found them highly informative [smile]

If you are open to testing solutions, I would highly recommend giving AdBuddiz a try.

Just a brief intro (and I apologise in advance for the self-promotion) - we are a mobile ad network that specialises in user friendly interstitials and video (rewarded and non-rewarded) and are one of the few networks that work on a CPI and CPM (via RTB) basis, helping our developers to earn more revenue than before.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like more info [smile]

I don't want to be rude or something, but presenting an ad-network name here won't do the trick. I suggest you come with some stats regarding the ECPM and ad coverage around the world, and any other facts that make this ad network better or suitable than others. Also, small ad networks that just come here to fish some customers are not welcomed here.

With patience,
Authwobe

Yup, please keep this place from becoming like the makingmoneywithandroid forum - there the situation with companies promoting their ad network/user acquisition thing/etc is just awful (for example, a game dev diary there attracts countless "suggestions" of ad networks to whom the poster is affiliated) - this is why I like to hang out here - it's like the quiet part of town without too much noise

I also am a long time member of makingmoneywithandroid forum and the spam/garbage there is also why I've come to this forum. I find talking about marketing, developing, monetizing a fun thing for me. But the spam has ruin that other forum, I hope Martin keeps a good control of this forum. The people here already are really great!

Thanks Ardihusen, glad it was useful [smile]

The ad placement can discourage users, so I think chose to show ads in a place where is a natural break in the game. For example show an ad after each level is finished.

Revenues wise Chartboost is the same as a lot of other providers nowadays BUT here is our story and why we are moving away to another provider.

Chartboost…they did a good marketing to be ‘’well known’’ on the web  but after 5 months of using Chartboot as a publisher to monetize our app, we have been able to get paid once only. For the first 2 months, we couldn’t get the payment via Paypal done. It was impossible to reach anyone with just an auto-reply (FB, email and linkedin. :-( ) until they mentioned on their Dashboard they will not support Paypal in December 2017…hey sorry we are August 2017…Why can’t we get paid then? We finally tried the wire transfer which worked a month later by which miracle, I don’t know (but we had to pay extra fees), and got paid only a portion of our revenue as it is set based on you last threshold which is checked on the 1st, we got the transfer on 8th….which according to their terms is after 15th… does it depends on the weather forecast!. Still, can’t reach anyone, and now we can’t get our next payment which was supposed to be by mid of Sept, we hope in Oct it’s gonna be ok. We are moving away from them, other devs have also that bad experience after reading reviews. We have been a bit naive and should stay away from a company who has no customer service. It’s never fun to rate badly but hey tomorrow they can close down and simply suspend our account without a notice and they get an extra USD5k, think about it. Hope this will help you as well.Screenshot 2017-10-11 09.08.51.png

Hey Giom88. Thanks for the reply to the post, and sorry for not replying sooner.

It's interesting to read about your experience with chartboost. I also heard some negative points about their customer service. I can only say based on my experience, but they've always gotten back to us quickly with any issues and paypal payments has never been a problem for us. But it is a pain that we can no longer use paypal. Wire transfer in to a UK account with GBP for us is a pain because it makes it hard to track how much we actually got paid and how much the fees were because of the currency changing from USD to GBP.

By the way, your ecpm is super high, wow. We only get an ecpm of about $2 to $4. How did you achieve that?
I did see that some accounts have been banned because of using some ecpm techniques which chartboost doesn't like, I don't know if that could be related to the lack of customer service they are giving you guys. Its just an idea.

Catch up soon
Martin
