Hello everyone,

Today while I was working on ASO I notice something really weird. AppAnnie, Sensor Tower and iTunes are giving completely different results for keywords.

See the screenshot below.

sensor tower vs appannie vs itunes.jpg

I have try many different games and different keywords and all of them have completely different rankings on those 3 platforms AppAnnie, Sensor Tower and iTunes.

Anyone else notice the same.

Thanks

Steve

On Sensor Tower you're looking at the iPhone rank and on AppAnnie you're looking at the iPad ranking. iPhone and iPad have different ranks.

Any difference between what AppAnnie and iTunes might just be lag, as iTunes will be the most up to date. Not 100% sure though.

BTW is that your game (or just an example)? Looks like it's doing very well. [smile]

Hey Steve, really good post, thanks for sharing.

As Grumpy mentioned it could be due to the time different of when Sensor Tower and Appannie update their stats and also the iphone and ipad ranks will be different. As well, on the itunes screenshot you sent, the search is for "rocket" not "rocket cars" so it will show different results.

For me I usually check appannie for ranking, but if I want to be 100% sure then I open the app store on my device and check.

By the way, are you guys using the ASO section in appannie.com to track your daily rank. I'm using that for our main games now on iOS and I need to do it more. It's pretty useful but only allows you to track a total of 100 keyword searches. The interesting part though is that it also shows other searches that you are ranking for which you might not have known about. This is especially true for games in google play since their search algorithm is a little harder to understand than iOS I think. For example we appear in some foreign word searches even though they are not in the description or translated descriptions. I think because google play sometimes auto-translates descriptions for different countries. As well I think it depends how the user downloaded your game. For example if the user looked for 'shooter game' and downloaded your game through a series of clicks, then you will start to rank for 'shooter game' even if you don't have those words in your description. I think this is why games like Angry Birds appears in so many searches unrelated to "angry" or "birds".

Hi,

@Grumpy  Even when switching both platforms on iphone or ipad sometimes the results are different. Lag it make sense for the current day or for few hours but not a week back or more.

@Martin I am using only one keyword "rocket" even on iTunes look closely [smile] I do agree with you many games on Google Play they ranked for a keyword which is not on their description or title at all, am still working and trying to figure it how is working.

Hey, I was facing the same issue before, so I researched a lot.  It turns out that iTunes on desktop actually gives you inaccurate data.  I compared it on my phone vs iTunes vs Sensor Tower.  Sensor Tower was actually giving correct data.  When you do ranks, it looks like they collect data every day, when you do "Keyword Research" it gets data right that second.  Source: https://blog.sensortower.com/blog/2012/09/28/ios6-app-search-results-are-completely-different-from-desktop-itunes/  + me trying it on my phone.

Apple and their... special stuff.
