I'm also in the process of publishing my first game to gear VR - initially I tried using the default sdk from oculus and the free samples, however I soon realized it lacked basic features such as Unity UI integration and ended up buying the easy gear vr input asset from the unity asset store since it provides all that stuff which should have been there by default ( and yes, it also has the trackpad = joystick thing for movement).
