Hello everyone, just here to announce that I am finally an OFFICIAL developer because I launched my app on Google Play today [biggrin]
It is quite an interesting development story and I have some free assets to share with you at the end.

So the app is called IdeaStarter and initially, it started out as "The World's First Crowdfunding Game" but then it turned into just an app.
I had this big idea to combine gamification with crowdfunding and make a fantasy football league but for ideas you know. Then I could have massive success (I was combining Supercell and Draftkings after all). Yep, that did not work out as expected!
Here are some screenshots of the app today:

And this is one with my mascot/company spokesperson - Ed Venture. You gotta have characters for a game after all.

The app is very fancy with an entire server framework capable of handling up to 4,140,000 users or so (*wink SQL reference). There's also a desktop site at http://ideastarter.io/ that you can check out. I haven't finished editing the website yet so you can still see some gamification tactics that I removed from the app for the time being.

Currently the app is a social network for crowdfunders and people interested in crowdfunding projects. Users can share crowdfunding projects that interest them and vote on other user submissions. There's also an entire real-time commenting/popularity system for posts. There's some really nice programming in this app.

The current state of the app is NOTHING compared to what I had originally planned. I started out by building an entire economy of points and ways to earn more points. Then, I build another economy ON TOP of that economy in the form of gold. Always gotta have a two tiered economy to prevent inflation; a tip learned from great games such as Dragonvale! Then I added a bunch of anti-hack implementations by making EVERYTHING done on the server. Can't have users hacking the economy now can we? This all took about a month and a half to implement.

What's next? Oh yes, levels! Look at all the levels originally planned for this app!
IdeaStarter-Level-Screen.png
Yep, 28 freaking levels! Towards the end I had to get really creative with the level names. Coming up with level names is quite difficult and makes me in awe of Bejeweled Blitz's 500 level names. Like the old RPG joke, your level isn't high enough unless you have 5 adjectives in your title and "Supreme" is repeated twice!

Now it's on to leaderboards! I had a leaderboard for all 5 categories that players could compete in. For each category, I created a "Weekly" and "All Time" category. Hooray, 10 freaking leaderboards! After all, we know players love to compete in leaderboards and see their names on top.

The leaderboards and levels took an additional month and a half. Whoopee!

Ok, back to reality. In reality, I wasted about 2 and a half months creating gamification features for my app when I should have worried about MARKETING. As it turns out, gamification is absolutely useless if you have no way of getting people to use your app profitably. Lesson learned - figure out marketing and distribution before developing ANYTHING ever again!

All right, thank you listening to my story. I still have much more to learn about the apps and games but developing and publishing IdeaStarter was a great learning experience. The biggest hurdles when developing this app was definitely the lack of a few certain assets. Why in the world are there no coin/gem graphics for sale? Also, where are the medal/level graphics that EVERY game needs? Finally, what about Google Play promotional image overlays? I guess every game requires somewhat custom assets in those categories so there are no readily available assets to purchase. Unfortunately, that means I was forced to create those assets myself. Hopefully, I can spare someone from recreating those assets so I am sharing them here with you all!

In the attachements, I have included two files:
IAP Money - in-app purchase money packages with a modern isometric design.
IAP_4.png
Promotional Image Overlays - 3 overlays + 4 backgrounds for Google Play game screenshots. 4:3 ratio and 3840 max resolution for perfect fit.

If you think they might help, go ahead and grab them. They are free for you to use! All I ask in return is that you download IdeaStarter and leave a 5 star review ---> http://bit.ly/ideastarter
This app just launched today so you know how critical the early reviews are! Even if you don't grab the assets, I would appreciate a download and review too [wave]

wow - this sure is a big investment - quite a risk you took here. Seeing as this is your first app, I do recommend starting with simpler/cheaper projects to get the hang of the marketing / it's very easy to pour a lot of money into a project only to have it not really play out (seen it happen many times with clients, as my "main" job is making outsourced unity3d games).   Then again, maybe you know something I don't  and I'll end up looking silly as your app gets tons of downloads [smile]

Actually, there is a website version at ideastarter.io
You know what that means don't you? [rolleyes] 2x the development work!
Currently the app is in a very good state. It is usable and very polished. The website is not in such a presentable state. As I wrote in the original post, the website still has vestiges of the gamification features I added. I am in the process of removing those artifacts before I start promoting the website too.
The website is very important because it is essential to developing a feedback loop. If I want users to share content, the backend development has to be done on the website first.

Yeah, it was really stupid in all honesty. I sunk a little bit of money into this project for sure. Still, I am glad I had this developed and I have absolutely no regrets. What I have in my hands is a really powerful gamification framework that I can apply to another project in the future. I do think gamification is a powerful tool as it leverages human psychology and was a major trend in 2015.
