But I really don't like games that have unnecessary ads, so I've gone with minimal ads with all my recent games.

At the moment Business Tycoon seems to have a very nice balance where users are viewing so many ads then purchasing a coins IAP to top them up.

We've moved to only rewarded video ads with our last game (used to use banners) and haven't used interstitials for ages. The trick with rewarded video ads is to give players really good value from it and then to limit it with time. For instance if you give them 5 minutes+ worth of grinding out coins for watching an ad but then only let them watch an ad every 5 minutes or so. That way it's really worth watching the ad, but it doesn't break the balance of the game. We often get comments that players like our ads for not being too pushy and being really rewarding.

What I'm trying to say is there's ways to increase your ad revenue without necessarily 'cheapening' your game. If rewarded ads are what you want to use then look at the balancing again and check to see if you're being generous enough. Also consider adding other types of rewarded ads (double gold for 10 mins) etc.

I'm only saying this because your ad revenue is abnormally low compared to your IAP, and it may just be because you're an exception to the rule, but if not you could see a huge revenue increase by properly monetizing it (like 200-300-400% growth!). It can be very difficult to get a game to *stick* but once it does you need to make money from it as your next 3 games may flop.

Thanks for keeping up with your diary! Very interesting to read through. I was wondering if you could perhaps share a few thoughts on marketing? You seem to be doing well with the downloads, so you must be doing something right [smile]

Ah yeah I see what you mean. Unfortunately with the framework that I used as the base for Business Tycoon means that I can't update it with out it causing problems with users that already have the game installed (annoying something with the way it saves the data) so I've not actually touched it since about June/July time.

I will take on your advise for the game after Heroes Vs Orcs (Heroes Vs Orcs won't be having any ads in it at all, only IAP (due to the style of game))

Thanks
Steve

Hi Mobidus,

I would love to be able to tell you that I knew what I was doing in terms of marketing, but really Business Tycoon's success is all luck and good timing. It was released about a month before tycoon style games became popular again (for a short period of time) and managed to be swept along with them. It currently sits quite well for some keywords (Business Tycoon, Tycoon, Tycoon Games, etc) which brings in about 1000 downloads a day.

Hey Guys,

Been a bit of a delay getting around to posting a update for last month, mainly down to change in my hours at work and suffering with a week of toothache. Didn't really get around to doing as much as I wanted to do during April and so far during May annoyingly! Heroes Vs Orcs is 90% finished, just need to get some time to sit and bug check then get the store assets sorted and port it across to iOS. Should be done for the end of the month.

Here's the stats for last month:

April

Android:
Downloads - 29,780 +3,485
IAP - £485.96 -£150.53
UnityAds - $205.51 +$26.23

iOS:
Downloads - 773 -27
IAP - $62.30 -$151.70
UnityAds - $30.52 +$13.50

Total:
Downloads - 30,553 +3,458
IAP - $694.98 -$314.13
UnityAds - $236.03 +$39.73

Estimated Total Rev ($) - $931.01 / £715.15 (-$274.40 / -£209.93) (based off XE.com exchange rate)

A drop from last month, but since last month was the best month I've had this year so far I didn't really expect to beat it, but still £700 is good enough for me at the moment as it's still topping up my monthly wage, so it goes straight into savings!

Years Goals

434,620/500,000 Downloads. (as of day of posting)

£965.08/£2,000 Revenue in a Single Month. (Only going to count my best Month for this)

May

This month is the last month at work till I get 4 months summer break from work, which should of been a slower month at work but has been our busiest, thus getting more hours and less time to work on games. We're coming to the end of the month now and from the 28th I am free to knuckle down and turn my one game success into multiple successful games!!

This summer is going to be different then the last 2, I had to change on to a Zero Hour contract in the back end of last year meaning that I am not on Pro-Rota anymore so wont be getting paid during my time off in the summer, so I've got all the motivation to build up something more successful, the plan is to have at least £1500 a month income from games by the end of the summer (September) and not need to go back to work (which shouldn't be too hard since I am constantly getting half that much with a single game, but this is a hard industry), I'll just have to see how it goes.

The aim for the rest of the month is to finish off and release Heroes Vs Orcs on both Android and iOS. Then work on the ground work for next game!

Anyways that's me for now, let me know if you have any questions

Kind Regards
Steve

Hey guys,

I'm now off work for the summer so I've got the time to do my update right away this month! It's been a very stable month what I have seen and similar to last month so happy about that.

I've had Heroes Vs Orcs released this month as well, though it is having a slow start while I let it find its place in the stores.

Here's the stats for last month:

May

Business Tycoon

Android:
Downloads - 27,263 -2,517
IAP - £478.94 -£7.02
UnityAds - $211.50 +$5.99

iOS:
Downloads - 705 -68
IAP - $51.00 -$12.30
UnityAds - $30.38 +$0.14

Total:
Downloads - 27,968 -2,585
IAP - $667.44 -$27.54
UnityAds - $241.88 +$5.85

Estimated Total Rev ($) - $909.32 / £705.47 (-$21.69 / -£9.68) (based off XE.com exchange rate)

Heroes Vs Orcs

Downloads
Android - 53
iOS - 208

No Revenue as of yet

Years Goals

448,169/500,000 Downloads. (as of day of posting)

£965.08/£2,000 Revenue in a Single Month. (Only going to count my best Month for this)

So you can see that the difference between this month and last month was less then £10 which I will take. It should of probably been a better month then it was as it started out very strong, however a few low sales days brought down the total.

June

So now that I am off work completely I have been able to really knuckle down and focus a bit more. I am currently half way through my next game (4 days working on it) This one is going to be a Idle Clicker game like Business Tycoon is but built a bit more like Adventure Capitalist. Really enjoying making this as I have enjoyed playing Adventure Capitalist before and hoping that returning to the genre brings some good downloads and increased revenue!

After this game has been completed I am in two minds of which game to do next, I have two ideas that revolve around clicker games. First being of course Business Tycoon 2 and secondly a game like Best Fiends Forever/Tap My Katamari! Either one will be fun to build but we will see how I'm feeling at the end of developing my current project.

Anyways that's me for now, let me know if you have any questions

Kind Regards

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is doing well! This month has been a bit of a let down on the revenue front, but I've got a new game out (Dot.com Tycoon) plus I also took the plunge and did a huge update for Business Tycoon!

With having all the time off at the moment I have been able to concentrate and learn some new things while working on Dot.com Tycoon which prompt me to thinking about updating Business Tycoon, I stripped back the code to as basic as I could, taking out any code that I thought could be the cause of problems when issuing update (the main reason why I've left it for so long) and re-balanced the businesses, added new features, removed things that didn't work and fixed some bugs. Managed to get this update released on the 1st July, so will see how this month goes to see if it was worth updating.

Here's the stats for last month:
Going to change this format a bit, going to show downloads for each game android/iOS and then revenue as a whole from all games

June - Downloads

Business Tycoon
Android: 32,086
iOS: 764

Heroes Vs Orcs
Android: 530
iOS: 151

Dot.com Tycoon
Android: 90
iOS: 325

June - Revenue

Android IAP: £271.06
iOS IAP: $134
UnityAds: $212.40

Estimated Total Rev ($) - $696.96 / £538.92 (based off XE.com exchange rate)

Years Goals

481,984/500,000 Downloads. (as of day of posting)

£965.08/£2,000 Revenue in a Single Month. (Only going to count my best Month for this)

Summery

So even though my downloads have been up compared to the month before, revenue was down which is quite a disappointment, but both Dotcom Tycoon and Business Tycoon update was released at the very end of the month so wont really know how they are going to do till this month! But were on the 4th today and so far (stats from the 1st - 3rd July) I've managed £142.65/$184.49 with IAP and Ads, but I wont keep my hopes too high as I've had good starts to the month before and seen it flatline for rest of it!

July

So whats in stall for July? Well I'm unsure of what do make next! I've got so many ideas floating around I just don't know what to do, though I know that I am not quite at the level I need to be for me to make Business Tycoon 2 (for what I want it to be like) yet. Going to take a break for the next few days and jot down the ideas and see which one makes sense, the main problem now is that I have bigger ideas which means it takes more time to develop, which in turns can mean more disappointment when that hard work doesn't turn into anything. But I will keep plugging along and making new games and see where things go!

Anyways that's me for now, let me know if you have any questions

Kind Regards

Thanks,

I like to keep it updated as it helps me keep track of everything. But also as there aren't really any other diaries still updating here anymore. Helps others out and can keep them motivated like yourself!

I agree with mzr, very nice to see yet another update from you. I would update my own, but I'm afraid there's really nothing to write about [smile]

I'm interested to see if you're going to have a substantial increase in downloads (and possibly revenue) now that you've updated Business Tycoon.

Hey guys,

A bit of a late update as I've been busy with other things that have kept me away from doing my game designing. Well last month was a bit of a weird one, with the release of Dot.com Tycoon and the new update for Business Tycoon I had a huge increase with the revenue but a large drop on my installs as well. Not really sure on why the installs have dropped and sadly it has been continuing into this month also!

Here's the stats for last month:

July - Downloads

Business Tycoon
Android: 22,102
iOS: 871

Heroes Vs Orcs - Going to drop the stats for this after this month
Android: 387
iOS: 149

Dot.com Tycoon
Android: 7,993
iOS: 496

July - Revenue

Android IAP: £1203.68
iOS IAP: $86.48
UnityAds: $769.90
Admob: £5.31

Average Daily Income: £60.44 ($77.80)

Estimated Total Rev ($) - $2,411.91 / £1,873.57 (based off XE.com exchange rate)

Years Goals

511,737/500,000 Downloads. (as of day of posting) - Done

511,737/1,000,000 Downloads (as of day of posting)

£1,873.57/£2,000 Revenue in a Single Month. (Only going to count my best Month for this)

Summery

So as you can see I've managed to finally cross the 500,000 download mark with Business Tycoon! Which I'm really happy with even though my downloads have been dropping since the start of the month, I am still not sure on why this has been the case as from what I can see it hasn't moved in any of it's rankings, it could basically be down to the genre not being as popular at the moment!

Revenue wise - You can see that there as been a massive increase in this, double of what my best month this year has been. This has been really down to some big spenders with some of them spending £100s (best day with IAP was £312.99/$402.91 (£219.07/$282.01 after googles take) which if I remember right $320 of that came from one spender in the US!! I also added in a few extra ways to add Rewarded Videos which saw a more the double increase with UnityAds income which is still going well this month.

So to summarize I am really happy with how the income side of things went this month but disappointed with the downloads starting to dry up. I know that this was a one off month with the amount that I earned due to the big spenders, I am currently predicting to be around the £1000 mark for August.

August

As I mentioned I have been busy with other things this month so far which have kept me away from making any more games. So nothing really to report on what August is going to be like. I would like to get back on it but I think I'm gonna just class it as a chill out month and start back fresh at the end / start of next month.

On the up side though, my workplace has been taken over by another company and I have gone onto a full time contract again so I have a set wage coming in every month again rather then a fluctuating one that I had with the zero hour contract!

Anyways that's me for now, let me know if you have any questions

Kind Regards
Steve

Thanks for the update and congrats on making it to the 500k mark! The increase in revenue is a great bonus, too. Too bad Heroes vs Orcs isn't living up to the expectations. Are you still creating updates for it?
