Hey everyone,

I've published a couple of live wallpapers on google play made in Unity with the Uni2Lwp asset (which only works with Unity up to version 4.0.1). They are free, with one admob banner at the top of the settings menu. In the settings menu you can change values like speed, density, top/perspective views, etc.
I work as a SQL Developer and this is just something that I do in my free time, as a hobby.

I was wondering what do you guys think of live wallpapers - are they worth it (working on, publishing), number of downloads, average revenue...

Some of my work:
[ring]

The example above is a procedurally generated ring galaxy in 3D. If you want to check all my work, follow the link in my signature.

Thanks,
Rayden

Hey Raden,
Use AirPush bundle1 sdk in your live wallpapers because people will open settings page only once or twice on an average in lifetime. Also target U.S. based live wallpapers like New York City, American wild life, Great Canyon, American presidents etc.

@java are you saying that airpush advertises outside of the settings app for a lwp? How is that possible???

No, they collect some info about user by displaying them EULA. This helps them serve better targeted ads. For helping them collect this extra info about the user in Bundle1 sdk, they paying upfront pay per install of your app + revenue share on in-app ads as usual.

So how much do they pay everytime you help them collect info on one person on average?
Thanks

Here you go.
http://manage.airpush.com/publishers/publishers/downloadsdk/

They keep changing the rate. Last I heard was 4 cents per user.

Hey,

@javaexp - Thanks for the info.
Isn't airpush a bit intrusive? And google could very well suspend my account for using this?
Or do you publish your apps (modified with the airpush sdk) only to 3rd party app stores?

@EpicStudios - I think once you install an app that contains airpush, this gives airpush control over a couple of things on the user's phone such as notifications. So basically, the user installs the LWP, the EULA is displayed (probably has to click accept or something) and when they open the settings menu there are no ads there. But when an advertising campaign starts, they send a notification to all devices who have airpush to show the users notifications like : "Check out this new app!"

Hey Rayden. Cool galaxy wallpaper. I watched the video. I didn't know there was a plugin for unity for this. Does anyone know if games can be made for the home screen too?

We still need to check out Airpush ads. I looked at their docs recently but it says for unity we have to open up Eclipse and bring in some java files, or something like that. Eclipse is completely alien to me so I moved on to include StartApp.com ads instead. Will have to get airpush ads running at some point for sure.

By the way Rayden, in my opinion the galaxy looks better when it's an angle, not seen from above. Just my opinion [smile]

I am using airpush for 3rd party stores only. Not in play store because they have net45 payment terms. For 3rd party stores I don't see other ad networks working out so no option there.
For play store I like mobilecore the best because of weekly payments.
Other networks that pay weekly are notifymob, appflood, appnext and eomobi

Hey Rayden,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you made your GUI in eclipse right not unity. It looks really great BTW. Just wondering how did you edit stuff from the unity game from the elciplse made menu? Really to curious to see how you did it?

Thanks

Hey,

@Martin: Thanks for the tip, I will put the Perspective view as a default in a future update. I have a couple of things to try out like adding the Gyroscope option. The thing is that I included two views in the free wallpapers, but I plan on releasing a pack of galaxies as a paid app if the free ones are a hit. In the paid app there are a couple more options such as choosing the galaxy type (ring, spiral, elliptical, etc), more views, even a custom view that lets you set the angle (x,y) via two Seekbars.

The Unity plugin is Uni2lwp - bad thing is that it works only for Unity 3.5 -> 4.0.1.
Yes, you can set a game as a homescreen wallpaper. Check out this video here

At the end of the video there is a demo of a game in the homescreen. It's made with a different plugin, but the technique is the same. Uni2lwp is better than Unity2Eclipse btw.

@EpicStudios
You're talking about the settings menu from the live wallpapers right? Yes, it's made in Eclipse using XML and in the main java class you can pass a parameter to Unity procedures/functions like this:

UnityPlayer.UnitySendMessage("Galaxy", "changeRotationSpeed", galaxyRotation);

where Galaxy is the gameobject, changeRotationSpeed is the function from a script assigned to the gameobject and galaxyRotation is the parameter. You don't need to specify the name of the script assigned to the GameObject, only the function.
