I usually listen to everything without text. Text makes me sing along, sing along makes me out of the code zone, out of the code zone -> not good!

Mostly film-ish music [smile]

Especially powerful music which makes me think I can handle the (Unity3D) world !

Film soundtracks are awesome as well.

I often listen to Revenue Of Shinobi from the Sega Genesis. One the best game soundtracks ever I think. I'll post it here later.

I remember playing this game on my SNES when I was a kid. We had rented it for 1 week and I couldn't put it down and I COULD NOT get the music out of my head. It was awesome. The opening theme is amazing and I even remember just leaving it to loop on my TV in my bedroom. This is a game play video, but still great to listen to while coding [smile]
The game is TOP GEAR 2, I really think this one was a hidden gem as most people I know never played it.

Bejeweled 2 and the bejeweled series has some of the best casual music ever. I remember listening to this track over and over when I was first learning to code. It kept me inspired and pumped to learn. So good [smile]

Green Hill zone has such a strong nostalgic feeling for me. I remember the first time I played Sonic 1 at my friends house and I was so blown away. The graphics, the speed, and especially the music. I still listen to the sonic 1 and 2 soundtracks to this day. Amazing [smile]

I never played this game as a kid, I only came across the Megaman series about a year or 2 ago when searching for top retro music on youtube. I think megaman 2 is probably the in terms of soundtrack.

Quack Shot is less well known than blockbusters like Sonic and Mario, but has some of the coolest music on the Genesis. I remember first playing this one at my friends house across the street when I was about 12 years old. Great animation, great game play, and some of the best graphics i had seen on the Genesis too.

Definitely my favourite Mario track. From Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Super Nintendo. I played it originally on the NES, but we owned a SNES and got this game for Christmas around 1995. Tonnes of fun and great to just listen to.

I can't get enough of Streets of Rage 2 music either. One of the best intro soundtracks ever on a 16 bit system.

Of course i had to include this one in here. It's a good mix of the main tracks from the original series. Good to hear the new ones as well even though I've played them a lot less. I think the newest mario game I played was on the Wii - New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I think that's what it was called, just a weird name.

Hey NKY, thanks for the post. I never played the game, but i'll check it out for sure. I've heard the final fantasy tracks a few times.

Here's another casual one from Bejeweled Twist. It's got to be one of the catchiest tracks every [smile]
Enjoy

Super Meat Boy is amazing, and part of the reason if the soundtrack. A great mix of new and retro sounds. This is probably my favorite track from the game:

Hi,
The Thunderforce games had great music. Here is the TF4 soundtrack (from the Megadrive):

'Stand Up Against Myself' - @ 57:22 is great

And, a much less known shooter (I'm a big fan of shoot em ups!), Gynoug. Great graphics, great game, creepy bosses and unusual, but great music, flick through and give them a try [smile] - the round 1 track (second in playlist), really gets you going and is a superb tune even by today's standards - it could be awesome re-done!

When I first heard the music in Donkey Kong Country I could not believe how good it was and how the SNES managed to make such amazing sounds. The games I'd played before still sounded quite old school and 8-bit in some cases, but this was a whole new level. I remember seeing the under water stage for the first time and it BLEW ME AWAY!!! The music, the graphics, the sound, the game play. It was just so good for the senses lol.

Here's all 3 DK Country soundtracks added in to one. Been listening to this all day. Enjoy [smile]

Super Mario World has some of the catchiest music I've ever heard. Such an amazing game too. The only negative point would be that they tended to re-use the same tracks for many of the levels. There isn't that much music in the game considering its almost 100 levels. But still an amazing game.

I love watching and listening to old retro game videos, even in the background when Im working.
This one shows a bunch of DOS games and it really takes me back to my early high school days. DOS was always a little alien to me and I thought that the game would crash every time, but my friend got a few games running pretty well on his old IBM machine. Including Theme Park, so awesome. The music in this video is great. Enjoy [smile]

I just had to include the 2010 trailer for Deus Ex. The music is so awesome and fits the action so well. This is the type of trailer that sells me the game big time lol

Crash Bandicoot has a lot of nostalgic value for me. I remember it was one of the first games, perhaps the very first game, that we had on our Playstation 1 (yes Im calling it 1 not One). It was cool to have a platformer that moved as both a 3rd person view and a traditional side scroller. Getting all the gems made it have a lot of replay value too, I remember spending days and days trying to collect them all, great fun. It also has a great little soundtrack too. I love the 'Great Gate' track. Enjoy [smile]

Can't believe I didn't add this one to the list earlier - Resident Evil 2.
The Front Hall track when the player enters the police station for the first time is one of my all time greatest video game music tracks. It was so so awesome and I couldn't get it out of my head for days. I even tried to play the piano section on my keyboard at home, no very successfully though lol. Enjoy guys, this brings back a lot of memories for me.

RE2 I think has one of the best instrumentals out there along with SH series.

Some suggestions:
Mother
Ada's theme
Theme of that saveroom where helicopter has crashed on 2nd floor

Is it just me or do they actually don't make such great BG music anymore?

hey Indiegamedude - yeah RE2 is awesome, along with RE1. I did play Silent Hill years ago but I've not listened to the soundtrack, I'll check it out.

The save room theme's are amazing from RE1 and RE2. I remember whenever I heard it that my heart would calm down lol, because it was safe zone.

Recently I'm sure if the big games make such good background music, but I've loved the Halo soundtrack from halo 1 and 2, I don't know about the more recent games though. I'll need to have a listen.

Sh series ost is more on the industrial and melancholic genre side. I really liked 'Betrayal' from sh2.

BTW SH2 is one of the best survival horror game out there, when you have time do check it out.

Very atmospheric with great story and psychological horror, the kind we don't see in current games.

I'll check it out for sure. I really enjoy watching videos of old games. i played Silent Hill 1 years ago. there was a problem with the console so it appeared in black & white. But that turned out to make the atmosphere even better [smile]

I love relaxing and working to this track from Mario Paint. It was an awesome game / app which I had on the SNES. First time to have a mouse on the system too I believe. This is one of the most nostalgic tracks for me too.

Enjoy [smile]

This is an awesome compilation of some classic retro game music like Megaman, Duck Tails, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania etc.
It's interesting that I never played these games as a kid but they still give me a kind of nostalgic feeling. I think because they are a throw back to when I was just starting to play console games in the late 80's / early 90's. Good memories of staying up all night long trying to complete some Spectrum ZX+2 games, wow those things were tough lol.

Enjoy [smile]

One of the catchiest tunes on NES ever, Gyromite. It's such a hidden gem, I think a lot of people don't know about this one. I first heard it on The Angry Video Game Nerd show.

I never had Sonic 3 at home but I remember playing this in an arcade. It seemed much larger than Sonic 1 and 2 in terms of level size. i didn't think the music was a catchy as the first 2 games, but it's a pretty good listen whilst working and still has that old school nostalgic feel to it.
