Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

In this thread we will be talking a look at my first game Ninja Fall which is available on the Google Play app store currently, I will be updating this thread from time to time with new updates to the game, information and monetization but as this is my first game i would not expect much.

Ninja Fall is an action drop game where the player playing as a Ninja drops from platform to platform avoiding spikes while collecting coins and extra lives. The player loses the game by falling off the bottom of the screen, not falling fast enough and being stuck above the screen or hitting a deadly spike.

Information as of 7/01/2015:
Engine: Unity 5.3
Code: C#
Installs: 2(?)
Rating: 5/5 (2 Ratings)
Catalog: Action
Development Time: 7 Days

Previous Experience:
My previous experience with developing games has been very lacking and not very detailed. I knew the very basics of C# from a console development course and a bit of programming in Unity from various small tutorials i found online. I also have web development experience with PHP with MySQL which helps.

Development Experience:
So for this game i was following a paid tutorial by Awesome Tut's for the majority of it which explained things in much more detail compared to the previous random small tutorials I'd previously found. Then after completing the tutorial I added some additional things into the game that I knew I could add with my current coding experience however some things i had to check the Unity Documentation for. I also re-skinned the game and add/changed animations.

Using the tutorial i learned a lot even though there is still a bit i am unsure and confused about. I'm sure if i proceed development a lot of it will stick and i will understand more as time goes on.

I also have very little experience with art so a lot of time was spend finding examples and making my own. I am not great with creating sprites but i think anything i can learn will be helpful in the future.

Development time was split into the following:
  • 4.5 days developing
  • 2 days creating art
  • 0.5 days monetization

Monetization:
Although this is my first game released onto the mobile market i have previously looked into using ad networks before in android games and they are the most difficult part of app development for new coders in my opinion. No tutorial could really give me a proper understanding on how to add them and to have them working correctly.

I have admod inside my game and that is because the tutorial i followed had a step by step guide on what to do for admob. I wish the troubles i previously had with getting ads working on no-one and good luck to anyone new trying.

Since releasing the game 24 hours ago i have under 10 impressions in total currently but like i said previously i am not expecting to much at the moment.

Conclusion:
I plan to update the game with new character skins in the future as well as a basic unlock system. However before that i plan to work on more games to grasp my understanding a bit more.

Thank you,
OutGG

Best of luck with it, it looks pretty polished for the amount of dev time and it being your first game. On Google Play it can be difficult to get downloads to start with, but it sounds like you've got the right approach to development, in treating this like an experiment to learn from.

Here is my feedback:

1. Oh i love the little Ninja Running in the Main Menue, even if the buttons look kinda standart it makes it look very polished right at the beginning.

2. You should make different highscores for easy, medium and hard mode because everybody gonna use easy mode for big highscores^^

3. It doesnt quit on the back button of my phone, thats forbidden on googles play.
Just drop this code somewere to fix it:

    void Update(){
        if (Input.GetKeyDown (KeyCode.Escape))
            Application.Quit ();
    }

Over all it could use some Items etc. but for the beginning it looks 10 times better than the first game i dropped to the google play store some months ago [tongue]

1. Thank you, I thought without the ninja running it would look to plain. I agree with you on the buttons but art is a skill i am lacking in greatly. I hope it will improve in time with my coding skills.

2. That is how is is suppose to be working. I checked it again myself to see if that is how it is working for me and it is. If it isn't for you please let me know as it is a bug.

3. Thank you for informing me of this, I have updated my code so that it now closes when the back button is pressed on mobiles. I was unaware that the back button was just escape. Once google play updates the APK it will be added.

Also thank you for you kind comments at the end, I thought about adding items but i want to get a bit more grasp on everything before adding them.

Update:
1 week since release.

General:
I honestly didn't think i would get any downloads or reviews but for my first game things are going well enough. I am working on releasing my second game as well as potentially making YouTube videos for both games and hopefully that will provide some more downloads. At some point i want to come back to this game in the near future and optimize it a bit better for tablets as well as add Google Services High Score.

On another note I would like to know how people know what games other people are search for besides what appears when you start typing in the search box. Guess i will look that up in the future.

Stats:
Installs: 4 / 5
Reviews:
3 x ★★★★★
Ad Impressions: <100
Profit: $0.33
