I would think Gear VR because its a more closed platform and I believe Oculus has a certain quality bar that games need to meet. Whereas google cardboard is just google play and you will be competing with 1000's of crapps. Also users who buy a Gear VR are more likely to spend money on games.

This is just an opinion, i've not yet published games in to these markets.

Im interesting to know what others think too.

soon Cardboard is gonna phase out and Google will release its headset in Google I/O. They have to do it, no other option.
New Android version Android VR like Android Auto will be coming out.
Ofcourse, this is as per leaks.

SO as of today, I would choose Gear VR over cardboard.

What worries me about Gear VR is, the monetization part: I make "snack" games, as Martin calls them - and I doubt anyone would buy those - anyone know if Gear VR has the ability to properly display ads?

I think ads will be Boring in a VR Game
and the last thing the USer will like to do is remove the Vr headset and go on the playStore to download a new game

I see some VR game give the user 30mn or 1hr on a game and ask them later to buy the game later

Just make a game and:

- import Cardboard SDK, pull the camera in the scene, build, publish game

- import Oculus SDK, pull the camera in the scene, build, publish game

Done, you have both in 5 minutes.

Any tutorial recommendation showing the whole process from scratch?

Import Cardboard SDK in Unity and just drag and drop the Cardboard Camera into the scene.

Its a 2 step process done in 10 seconds. Just apply this to your game.

With GEAR and Oculus you need a sig file thats generated in the Dev portal needed to access the API.
